Pineapples and Health

Pineapples are a very sweet, yellow fruit, known to come from fields in Hawaii and South America. They have some of the best nutrients and enzymes for humans.

Pineapples are known for their digestive properties, but has been shown to be effective in a large variety of conditions. Pineapple juice is 5 times more effective in treating cough than cough syrup! This is due to the enzyme bromelain.

Bromelain is known as the pineapple extract. Bromelain is found in higher amounts in the pineapple stem and core and lower amounts are found in the rest of the fruit.

  • Allergies

  • Sinus infections
  • Connective tissue injuries
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Heartburn or diarrhea
  • Cardiovascular disorders
  • Slow down cancer progression

Bromelain is relatively safe and does not normally cause severe effects when taken in large amounts. However, there is a possibility that some people may suffer from allergic reactions, who have pineapple allergies. Because it helps prevent blood clots, it’s important to be especially careful when consuming extra pineapple or bromelain supplements if you’re any taking blood-thinning medications. 

Bromelain Dosage

  • To help with allergies — 1,000 milligrams daily of bromelain
  • Treating arthritis — 400 milligrams taken 1–2 times daily
  • Improve digestion — 500 milligrams taken 3 times daily with meals
  • For help preventing cancer — 2,000 milligrams daily, ideally take with other proteolytic enzymes
  • For help with surgery recovery — 1,000 milligrams 3 times daily taken between meals

Uses of bromelain have been observed to be dependent on the time when it is taken. For example, if taken after a meal, bromelain may help promote better digestion and absorption, but when taken on an empty stomach, it can help alleviate inflammation (aka allergies, arthritis, etc.).

You can supplement with bromelain tablets or powder. You can juice pineapples or/and eat pineapples frozen or fresh.

Drinking fresh pineapple juice has been suggested to be a powerful remedy against inflammatory diseases. Four ounces a day to helps prevent digestive issues and up to eight ounces to treat illnesses like ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease or constipation.
