Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care
Many people believe when you are pregnant you can not see a chiropractor. This is completely FALSE! Chiropractors are trained on how to care for pregnant patients. Investing in the fertility and pregnancy wellness of women who are pregnant or trying to conceive is a routine care for most chiropractors.
Why Should You See a Chiropractor?
During pregnancy, there are several physiological and endocrinological changes that occur in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. The growing abdomen with the extra weight causes an increased back curve, pelvic changes and postural changes which causes extra pain and discomfort for the mom.
Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth. Breech and posterior positions can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interventions such as C-sections.
What are the Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?
Potential benefits of care during pregnancy include: Maintaining a healthier pregnancy; Controlling symptoms of nausea; Reducing the time of labor and delivery; Relieving back, neck or joint pain; Prevent a potential C-section; Bring baby down to a better position to help mama breath properly; along with many others.
Having a healthy pregnancy with chiropractic care, can prevent future injury to the low back (lumbar spine). The extreme weight gain and loss can put a ton of pressure on the low back and cause many problems. If you take care of your spine while pregnant it can decrease the chances of having major back problems in the future.
What about Chiropractic Care after Birth?
In the eight weeks following labor and delivery, the ligaments that loosened during pregnancy being to tighten up again. Ideally, joint problems brought on during pregnancy from improper lifting or reaching should be treated before the ligaments return to their pre-pregnancy state to prevent muscle tension, headaches, rib discomfort and shoulder problems.
Helping baby and mom have a good nursing relationship is also important. Chiropractic can help with difficulties with breastfeeding and latch. Women are also afraid of Mastitis, which can also be relieved with chiropractic care.
Pregnancy can lead to many different symptoms and each pregnancy can be different than your others. If you have any questions on whether chiropractic can help you while breastfeeding or pregnant, give us or a chiropractor near you a call!
