Problems with Acetaminophen
There are more than 1,000 medications have been identified as being potentially toxic to the liver. But did you know acetaminophen is the #1 cause of liver failure?
Taking too much acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the US. Acute liver failure can occur after a very large dose, or after higher than recommended doses every day for several days.
I do a lot of truck driver physicals in my office. When I run their urinalysis and see blood in their urine, first question is always about a UTI. If the driver denies any symptoms, I always ask about the use of over the counter pain medication. 9 times out of 10, the driver admits to taking pain medicines on an empty stomach.
How much is too much?
Acetaminophen is useful for managing chronic pain and mitigating fevers. It does not reduce inflammation, like aspirin and NSAIDs do. (Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve)).
In January 2014, the FDA issued a statement advising doctors to stop prescribing combination prescription pain relievers that contain more than 325 mg of acetaminophen per tablet or capsule. Not to exceed 4,000 mg per day, which is 12 pills at 325 mg per pill, per day.
That equates to 2 pills every 4 hours. But, what can you get on the shelf at Walmart? Both Acetaminophens have 500 mg per pill, almost double the recommended amount per pill. Thats now only 2 pills every 6 hours!
Most people aren’t aware that there are more than 600 medicines on the market that contain acetaminophen. Analysis of national databases show that acetaminophen-associated overdoses account for about 50,000 emergency room visits and 25,000 hospitalizations yearly.
