Winter Advisory: Slips and Falls on the Ice
Coming out of the house on Thursday morning, my daughter who turned 2 on Saturday (*insert cry face*), got excited to see snow and busted her butt on the ice. She fell straight on her tailbone and fell backward. After picking her up, while she had tears streaming down her face, she asked me for an adjustment.
I am always amazed at Addison. She is 2 years old and understands the power of an adjustment after an injury more than almost ALL ADULTS! If she has a runny nose she asks for an adjustment. Then, I always have to adjust her baby dolls as well! Although she is getting pretty good at imitating me.
If you get adjusted immediately or shortly after an injury, you are less likely to have pain resulting from that injury. If you wait several days, weeks, months until you see a chiropractor, then you are going to need a series of treatments to get well.
Fall Prevention
Winter-related slips and falls claims doubled in 2013-2014 over the previous year, representing 29 percent of all workers’ compensation claims, according to Accident Fund Insurance Company of America and United Heartland.
- Wearing boots or shoes with good traction will help tremendously. Make sure to stay away from heels, or shoes with slick soles.
- Take smaller steps or do the “shuffle”. (As my kids were getting out of the car at “Gammy and Papas” house, I started singing the Cupid Shuffle... 😂)
- Keep your arms free of objects. When you are able to use your arms for balance, you are less likely to fall.
- Walk on grass or dirt instead of paved ways. This allows more traction.
- When getting out of your car, make sure you step straight down instead of stepping out away from the vehicle.
What to Do When You Fall
Even minor slips can cause problems a day or so later. I have seen many patients that hurt after slipping and catching themselves. Sometimes it would have been better off (dare I say) to fall then to catch themselves on the way down.
First, make sure nothing is broken. If you have serious pain immediately then go to the ER to make sure you didn’t break anything. Next, if nothing is broken go see your (or a) chiropractor.
A chiropractor can make sure that your spine is aligned and moving properly. When you get a fixation in a joint, the joint will wear unevenly, and in time can cause serious issues. Think of disc degeneration or spurs. So the sooner you get adjusted the less issues you can have down the road.
If you have any questions give us or a chiropractor near you a call! Chiropractors look at the whole body and how every joint functions. Sometimes your pain is resulting from a fixation issue in another part of your body.
